The Magic of Roald Dahl

by Nina

From the magical world of Willy Wonka to the fantastic tale of James and the Giant Peach, Roald Dahl’s great imagination has enriched the lives of so many children around the world over the decades. In celebration of what would have been his 100th birthday, we decided to investigate the nation’s love of this classic children’s author as well as illustrator Quentin Blake whose charming drawings feature in the majority of Dahl’s books.

Having looked at search engine results from across the UK, we can now reveal which Roald Dahl characters are the most beloved as well as which characters have become forgotten over the years. Will it be the clever Mr Fox or perhaps it’s the extraordinary Matilda who’s captured the hearts of the nation? Take a look at our magnificent map to discover which character is the favourite in each major UK city.

While Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and London prefer the heroes of Roald Dahl’s stories, other cities such as Cambridge, Glasgow and Brighton favoured the antagonists with the Grand High Witch, Miss Trunchball and Violet Beauregard coming out on top. Unsurprisingly, London is the city with the most Roald Dahl fans while Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool are close behind.

The most loved characters of all were revealed to be The BFG, Willy Wonka and Sophie from the BFG- however, there are some characters that have slowly been forgotten over the years too. Do you remember the lonely Mr Hoppy from Esio Trot or how about Little Billy from Roald Dahl’s last published work, The Minpins? The gigantic Peach from James and the Giant Peach was also one of the most forgotten characters despite its occupant being the most loved Dahl character in Sheffield.
